Seven things to love about Venice.

1. Its lovely little winding laneways which suddenly bring you to waterways big or small, or little squares or piazzas. A surprise round every corner.

2. Its gorgeous old slightly crumbling buildings, big and small.

3. There are no cars. You go everywhere by foot or boat. Walking around it easy and there is no noisy, smelly traffic.

4. There are almost endless things to see - museums, churches with magnificent artworks, shops, Murano glass.

5. Get a vaporetta pass and you can hop on and off boats to your hearts content. You can visit the Lido (beachside) or the islands of Murano (for glass making), Burano (for lace making and brightly coloured houses).

6. Having chocolate brioche and jam croissant for breakfast in your local cafe.

7. Drinking Prosecco and people-watching.
